Every morning when we get up we all have our own routine, mine happens to be when I get out of bed the first thing I do is go brush my teeth. As I do every day/week/month. I could not help but wonder what is on my toothbrush? and what is going in my mouth every morning when I brush me teeth? now that I've asked myself these questions the curiosity was killing me and I needed to find some form of research that was executed on the simple toothbrush to address these questions.

Staphylococci Bacteria |
Based on the research done at the University of Alabama in May 6, 2014 Dr. Maria L. Geisinger, DDS, assistant professor of periodontology she states., "The oral cavity is home to hundreds of different types of microorganisms..." in her research Dr. Geisinger discover strains of Staphylococci, coliforms, pseudomonads , yeasts, intestinal bacteria, and fecal germs these can all be found on your tooth brush. ways to prevent the bacteria from building up on your tooth brush are as followed, Don't share your toothbrush-Sharing of your toothbrush can lead to nasty bacteria that can cause dental decay and periodontal diseases. rinse your toothbrush in antibacterial mouth wash after each use, and replacing your toothbrush every three to four months.
Now that you know what can be on your toothbrush do you think you can still look at it the same?
I definitely can't...

Oh my goodness David you have completely changed the way I look at my toothbrush. Who knew so many little microbes were living on my toothbrush and being put in my mouth every time I went to brush my teeth. Knowing that yeast, bacteria, germs, etc. have been living there makes me rethink about how often I want to switch out my toothbrush and about not only soaking my toothbrush in antibacterial mouthwash but also rinsing my mouth out about 100 times. I never knew that microbes were living on my toothbrush but after reading this blog I realize it should have been obvious to me because microbes are everywhere. I do not know many things about microbes but I have learned that microbes can live in practically every environment and adapt to live in environments they are not use to. There have been records of at least 500 microbes that can live in the mouth so knowing that it is not shocking that they colonize onto your toothbrush. But knowing this it makes you want to rethink how often you want to switch your toothbrush and clean out your mouth!

ReplyDeleteEww!. As disgusting as it sounds it good to know these things. I do have a few question. Like are all bacteria all bad or are some good? How do the bacteria get into your tooth brush? Should we change our personal hygiene to help prevent this or keep our surroundings clean? Should we keep on researching to see if there is any possible signs of a bacteria that can harmful to us? These are the only questions that I have. I love your blog. I liked how you put your own sense of humor in this.
First thing I wanted to do after reading this blog was to go out and buy a new toothbrush as soon as possible!! I can't believe how many disgusting things live in things we put into our body everyday. I'm wondering how the bacteria stays on your toothbrush even though you rinse it out daily?? I always thought a toothbrush was supposed to be very clean because we use it TO CLEAN our teeth. Are we just making our mouth more and more dirty? I can't believe they can make us sick! Knowing how much I put into my mouth when trying to clean my teeth is a bit disturbing. I will definitely be changing my toothbrush out more often than necessary! You've changed my perspective on this subject completely, not that I gave it much thought to begin with but still.
ReplyDeleteKnowing how nasty our tooth brushes can get makes me want to change it everyday! Even though that would be way too expensive, I still can't look at my toothbrush the same. I knew that you were supposed to switch it out every few months, but maybe I will do it more often now. I did my blog on Staphylococci that can sometimes be helpful. Are there any microbes that are growing on our tooth brush that could be helpful? This article definitely effected the way I think about brushing my teeth! Thanks for sharing it really taught me a lot!
ReplyDeleteEven thought this is gross i think that its good to know so that you know how to better prepare yourself so that you can prevent yourself from getting sick, as well as preventing bacteria from growing as well. One of the grossest parts about it was the part about sharing toothbrushes, no one should do that
ReplyDeleteThis is truly disgusting that's crazy that the stuff could be on my toothbrush I'm glad I just got a new one not even two days ago! This article is a least a little better than the article about the poop bugs in your arms but I can understand how microwaving your toothbrush or just boiling it in hot water can really help since it can kill everything. Great research was done here thank God someone did it instead of finding out to the bad way
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty much safe to say that I completely agree with everyone else one here. This is gross and surprising that what we use to clean is actually something that is holding on to germs. I guess with that being said it is kinda ignorant of people not to clean something that cleans germs off,..it makes me wonder where we thought or still think these germs are going. Obviosly they are not disappearing into thin air. This just makes me realize how we are so smart but do not think as mush as we should. Something that cleans germs needs to be cleaned itself.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog David! I especially enjoyed your use of humor at the end and your images. In terms of the study recommendations, it would be more effective to rinse your toothbrush in mouse wash just BEFORE you use it.
ReplyDeleteTera's comment: "This just makes me realize how we are so smart but do not think as mush as we should." was especially great!
